Total Joint Replacement Surgery
Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint, such as a hip or knee are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic, or ceramic device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. Total joint replacement can be performed on the ankle, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, but the total joint replacement surgery with Firelands Sandusky Orthopedic Group focuses on full and partial knee and hip replacements.
Hip replacement involves replacing the femur (head of the thighbone) and the acetabulum (hip socket). Typically, the artificial ball with its stem is made of a strong metal, and the artificial socket is made of polyethylene (a durable, medical-grade plastic). In a total knee replacement, the artificial joint is composed of metal and polyethylene and it is used to replace the diseased joint. The prosthesis is secured into place with bone cement or is covered with an advanced material that allows bone tissue to grow into it
Should I Consider Surgery?
Certain conditions can cause joint pain and disability that lead patients to consider joint replacement surgery. In most cases, joint pain is caused by damage to the cartilage that lines the ends of the bones (articular cartilage). If you suffer from one of the following conditions, your doctor may recommend a total joint replacement
- Severe joint pain that limits your everyday activities
- Long-lasting knee inflammation
- Joint fractures
- Pain that cannot be controlled with medicine

Robert M. Carlisle II, MD
Orthopedic surgery has been my career goal since middle school. Breaking various digits while playing sports introduced me to an orthopedic surgeon who subsequently became my mentor throughout medical school, residency, and fellowship. Since entering the field of medicine, I have always enjoyed interactions with my patients. Everyone has a unique story to tell, and I felt being a total joint surgeon gave me the chance to hear patients’ stories from all different walks of life.
